Our next adventure: a thrilling, quirky trip from the north to the south

0

My next tour will be the quirkiest, most eclectic adventure of them all. It will be a 13-day England Top to Bottom Tour, starting in late September in Edinburgh, Scotland (I told you it was quirky) and ending in early October in London.

Royal Mile. Edinburgh

We are starting in Edinburgh because it is a lot easier to get from there to the lovely Northumberland coast of England and down to Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
As well, Edinburgh is a stunning capital with many fabulous places worth seeing, not the least of which is the magnificent Royal Mile.

Holy Island/ Lindisfarne

From Edinburgh, we want to go down the east coast, calling at Berwick-upon-Tweed and the famous Holy Island and Lindisfarne before arriving in the Geordie capital of Newcastle with its seven bridges, most significantly the iconic Tyne Bridge.

Famous Tyne Bridge in Newcastle upon Tyne

From Newcastle, we want to visit Alnwick to see its beautiful garden as well as Durham to explore its landmark cathedral. Newcastle has long had a grip on my imagination, not only because of the music of Lindisfarne, which I loved in the 70s, and the delightful TV detective series, Vera, but because of its evolution from industrial and shipbuilding powerhouse city to the modern, vibrant, classy city it is today.

Leaving Newcastle, we would go to Carlisle and then cut left down through the Lake District, calling at Keswick on the way, before going through Lancaster and into Liverpool.

Ferry cross the Mersey in Liverpool

In Liverpool, we want to see all the sights of the city, take the ferry across the Mersey, see the Liver Building and the places the Beatles hung out. In the 70s, I was in Liverpool often. As a journalism student in Preston, it was easy for me to get there for poetry concerts. I got to know the Mersey Poets, Adrian Mitchell and Roger McGough, quite well and even hired them a few times for poetry nights.
While in Liverpool. I want us to nip down to Chester for the day to see the beautiful city of Tudor buildings and the lovely centre. I think it would be a delightful day trip.

From Liverpool, our route will take us south through Shrewsbury where we will stop for lunch and a garden visit and then into Stratford-upon-Avon, birth place of the Bard and more, and then on to Oxford for a couple of nights.

Shrewsbury is a beautiful town with a gorgeous garden
Never tired of London. Love Green Park and Mayfair. London always comes through

From there, we will head into London, a city we know very well by now, a city that is layer upon layer of culture and entertainment and fun. We will stay at least two nights but I am sure many of our party will want to add on more days to make their time in the English capital even more enjoyable.

A complete day-by-day itinerary plus pricing and other details will be announced here shortly. In the meantime: Please feel free to contact me with questions any time at swhysall@hotmail.com
