On our last day in Zagreb, we walked from our hotel to the botanic garden.
Inside we found an impressive collection of specimen trees and shrubs, many of which are spring-flowering and therefore at their peak in April-May.
But there were areas with fall colour and we also admired the branching structure of some of the older trees, such as Sophora japonica pendula.
What was especially impressive about this botanical garden was that there were signs of its continuing evolution with the construction under way of a long pergola tunnel that stretches the entire length of the garden.
This will one day be an amazing tunnel of foliage and flowers, supporting all sorts of vines including roses and clematis and honeysuckle.
In other parts of the garden, we found a red Japanese arching bridge where nearby there was a wollemi pine inside a protective cage.
From the botanical garden, we dispersed into the town centre.
We visited the lively fruit and vegetable market where it was a joy to sit and watch the trading going against the backdrop of a baroque church spire.
On a lower level, we found a women’s folk choir singing and every now and then a troop of soldiers, some on horseback, in traditional costume came parading through the crowds for entertainment.
From Zagreb, we made the short journey to our next stop – Ljubljana in Slovenia.
This is the final stop on our tour. We will tour the town and have a farewell dinner before going to the airport to catch our flight home.
