Hot new perennials for my sunny border

0

First thing this morning, I found room for a bunch of new perennials in a sunny spot already home to some ornamental grasses and weigela and burgundy and lime green ninebark.

Coreopsis Uptick

I put in six Coreopsis Uptick, considered the “kings of summer” and have the added appeal of being hybrids of a native North America species.

The names of the ones I planted are Yellow & Red and Cream & Red.

They grow to 30-36 cm high (12 to 14 inches) and about the same wide.

Penstemon Mission Bells

Next I put in six Penstemon, three Cherry Sparks and three Deep Rose.

These are tall and statuesque plants that are more heat tolerant and hardier than other penstemon. They grow to about 46-51 cm (18 to 20 inches) by about 36-41 cm (14 to 16 inches) wide.

Salvia Blue Marvel

My last set of plants was six Salvia Blue Marvel, meadow sage, that has a reputation for blooming reliably year after year.

The large blue flowers are said to be a magnet for hummingbirds and bees and these plants can also be grown very successfully in containers.

All these perennials like a sunny location and well-drained soil.
