Lovely gardens of Lawrence Johnston

What few people know about Lawrence Johnston, the great British garden maker, is that he was almost left for dead on the battlefield during the First World War.

A friend just happened to spot his body lying on the top of a pile of corpses and noticed that he was breathing. The friend called for help and Johnston was rescued and revived.

Had he not been saved, the world would have been deprived on two of the most beautiful and influential gardens – Hidcote Manor in Gloucestershire and Jardin Serre de la Madone in Menton on the south coast of France.

I have been lucky enough to visit to both gardens – three times to Hidcote and once to Serre de la Madone. Here’s a little video tribute I did.
