The Handy Dandy Scandi Tour: Our new exciting adventure to beautiful Denmark, Norway and Sweden

0

Let me start by saying that I was sincere when I said last year, after the delightfulTop to Bottom Tour of Scotland and England, that I would not be doing any more tours.

What happened was that people kept asking us “what are you doing next?” and “where are we going next?” and saying things like “why not do one tour a year, or even one every two years.”

In response to these comments, Loraine and I started talking and we settled on the possibility of going to Scandinavia – Denmark, Norway and Sweden – a place we have never been before.

To cut a long story short, we came up with the Handy Dandy Scandi Tour – the easiest, quickest, most efficient way to see the best of Scandinavia in the least time-consuming, most affordable, most fun way.

Let me tell you more.

Copenhagen famous Little Mermaid

But first, let me quickly say what comes to mind when I think of Scandinavia.

Denmark. Norway. Sweden.

Vikings. Norse Legends.

Odin. Balder. Loki. Thor. Asgard.

Fjords. Mountains. Forests.

IKEA.

Saunas.

Hans Christian Andersen. The Little Mermaid. Ugly Duckling.

Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen.

The Vikings are just part of the story of Scandinavia.

Tivoli.

Midnight sun. Northern Lights.

Edvard Munch. The Scream.

Victor Borge.

Edvard Grieg. Peer Gynt. Hall of the Mountain King.

Henrik Ibsen. Peer Gynt. A Doll’s House.

Pippi Longstocking.

ABBA.

Alfred Nobel.

Carlesberg beer.

Greta Thunberg.

Liv Ullmann.

Ingmar Bergman.

Bjorn Borg.

Carl Linnaeus.

Leif Erikson.

Kierkegaard.

LEGO.

Okay, you get the idea. There are many touchstones when you think of Scandinavia, not just Vikings, ice, snow, skiing, and herring.

Oslo opera house is a spectacular place to visit

What you’ll find when you delve into the Handy Dandy Scandi Tour itinerary (which is available on request from me at swhysall@hotmail.com) is well-framed visits to the key capitals – Copenhagen, Oslo and Stockholm – plus exciting rides down Norway’s longest fjords, a high-speed rail journey across the beautiful, iconic, scenic landscape of both Norway and Sweden, plus quality time in famous coastal destinations, such as Bergen with exquisite wharves and quaint colourful houses and fabulous markets and shopping areas.

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen is a beautiful as well as fun place to visit

You’ll get to see castles and palaces, mountains and museums, forests and fjords, wharves and waterfalls, iconic gardens and parks, royal courts and regal waterfronts, ancient Viking ships and modern sculpture.

The idea is to see Norway, Sweden and Denmark without becoming overwhelmed. I have adopted the Three-Bears principle: not too much, not too little, just enough time, a happy balance between sophisticated cities and rugged countryside, a pace that feels just right.

The fast-train ride from Bergen to Oslo will be a party. It is also one of the most scenic rides in the world.

Stockholm

I have deliberately and consciously ruled out long bus rides. I want to travel in comfort and quickly to great places where we can have fun and enjoy being together, seeing exceptional sights.

Anyway, with Danny Kaye’s words, “vonderful vonderful Copenhagen, salty old queen of the sea,” today I am officially announcing the 12-day Handy Dandy Scandi Tour from September 10 to 22, 2026.

The tour will start in Copenhagen, move to Bergen, then to Oslo, and finally to Stockholm – four great cities with wonderful history, art, culture and cuisine. I’ve tried to move us in the easiest, most efficient, most fun way possible, and I know, as always, it will be a memorable experience.
